In Italy the most important and famous wineries date back centuries ago, however Planeta originated in the early 90's of the last century. When Alessio and Santi started, along with their famous uncle Diego Planeta, to produce wines in Menfi and Sambuca di Sicilia. They were joined a bit later by Francesca, daughter of Diego, and acquired vineyard sin Noto and in Vittoria, situated in the southern region of Sicily. Finally a few patches of vineyards were recently planted on the flanks of the volcano Etna.
In the first year the family was assisted by renowned winemaker Carlo Corino as they planted both indigenous and international grape varieties. Mainly in the vineyards of western Sicily they experimenting with Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. And also the indigenous white Fiano Grecanico can be found there. In the southern region, Noto, Vittoria, consist of mostly local red grape varieties like Nero d'Avola and Frappato , though we can find here also the sweet Moscato Passito. Mount Etna shows off the Carricante on volcanic substrates.
The success story starts in the year 1995, especially the wooded Chardonnay was immediately lauded by innumerable international wine journalists. A few years later, the same happened with the other white top wine, Cometa (100% Fiano), which is now almost rewarded every year with the highest score at the presentation of the Gamberro Rosso.
The four red wines - Burdese, Merlot, Santa Cecilia, Syrah - are also regularly rewarded with prices, although the more inexpensive Cerasuolo di Vittoria and Plumbago are highly sought-after wines for lovers of typical Sicilian wines.
