When Dirk Van Der Niepoort in 1987 joined the family grounds, after an extensive training in Switzerland and an internship in Napa Valley, the whole of Douro is standing at the beginning of an enormous evolution and to some extent even revolution!
While the entire Douro was clinging on to the worldwide reputation of Porto, thanks to Father Rolf, Dirk started 'his' ultimate challenge. Bitten by the wine bug, he created the first milestone in 1990, Robustus. The success reached our far beyond the Portuguese borders and because of this the top wines like Batuta, an elegant powerhouse, and Charm, a silky wine that can compete with the top of Burgundy, were born.
Not surprisingly, he is well known, both at home and abroad, as the king of the Cima Corgo, the best quality in the Douro sub region. Undoubtedly Dirk knows how to use his rare gift of making boundless wines and conquer many wine lovers heart year after year.
Together with sommelier Luis Sabre, Dirk always raises the bar in Quinta do Napoles, their state-of-the-art wine cellar. With wines as Redoma and Tiara and show, they show the very best of the Douro grape varieties. Naturally each with their own typical properties. in the entire valley are no less than 80 different grape varieties and vineyard terraces, going between 80 and 800 meters altitude, obviously sun oriented in every direction. And because of this Vertente and the very enjoyable "Santé Allez!" are the best examples of the Douro.
Dirk Niepoort is assisted these days by his sister Verena. She tries to explain to the consumer, by manner of the story about the Ruby Dum and Tawny Dee, the difference between the large casks (ruby, LBV and Vintage Port) and pipes (tawny, 10 years and colheita) matured Porto's.
