Maucaillou is above all a family saga, a history of patience and passion. When the Baroque château, half Renaissance and half Arcachon villa, was built in 1875, there were only 3 hectares of vines. The building is of a style which was very popular in the Médoc during the late 19th century. The Dourthe brothers, Roger and André, acquired the estate in 1929 and made a major effort to increase the vineyard area. Philippe Dourthe took over management from his father, Roger, in 1967 with 20 hectares. He has added another noteworthy part of the Maucaillou edifice: 67 extra hectares of vines located on the three highest rises in the Moulis appellation.
The grapes are carefully sorted during harvesting and the wine is produced according to the most enlightened winemaking principles. The huge ageing cellars hold some 2600 oak barrels, which are regularly renewed. What is the result of all these efforts? The wine is of a sumptuous colour with a rich, ripe bouquet. It is concentrated on the palate, with subtle tannin and an astonishingly long aftertaste. Maucaillou has won numerous medals at tasting competitions and attracts high praise from the wine media.
