Château La Gaffeliere, 1er GCC "B"
Bordeaux > Saint Emilion - 65.00% Merlot; 20.00% Cabernet Franc; 15.00% Cabernet Sauvignon
|
Vines have been grown at Château La Gaffelière since Gallo-Roman times, as attested by a villa from this period discovered by Count Léo de Malet Roquefort in 1969. This discovery brought with it a nagging coincidence: the Roman poet Ausonius (Ausone) is known to have had a vineyard in Saint-Emilion at about the same time this villa was built, in the 4 th century AD. Furthermore, recent studies by Catherine Balmelle, the head of a French archaeological team from the CNRS (Centre National de Recherche Scientifique), show the ancient winemaking vocation of this site. More than 10 rooms decorated with multicoloured mosaics are proof of the beauty and luxury of this villa, named Le Palat (Palatium = Palace). The Malet de Roquefort famliy have owned and managed Château La Gaffelière for 4 centuries. They have a longer history than any other winegrowers in Saint-Emilion. The current owner makes use of this precious experience to renovate when necessary, but also to perpetuate the traditions that have made La Gaffelière famous around the world. The wine is a luminous, deep, ruby-red colour. Its bouquet is rich and complex with hints of blackcurrant and truffle. On the palate, La Gaffelière is powerful, yet soft and well-balanced, with a wonderful long aftertaste.
